TAPACHULA |
| |
| Though most travellers see it as no more than an overnight stop en
route to or from Guatemala, TAPACHULA does actually have something to
offer, being a gateway to both the coast and the mountains, with a
lovely setting at the foot of the 4000-metre Volcán Tacaná . A busy
commercial centre, known as the capital of the Soconusco, the
southeastern region of the state, it grew in importance in the
nineteenth century with the increasing demand for coffee and bananas. As
a border city, it has a lively cultural mix, including not only
immigrants from Central America, but also small German and Chinese
communities. The Museo Regional de Soconusco (Tues-Sun 10am-5pm; US$0.50),
in the same building as the tourist office, tells their story, as well
as displaying scraps of excavated finds from local ruins. |
