SAN QUINTIN |
| |
SAN QUINTÍN is the first town of any size south of Ensenada, and
even here, though there are a couple of big hotels, most of the
buildings look temporary. There's no reason to stop here unless you
intend to head to Bahía San Quintín , which is undeniably attractive,
with five cinder-cone volcanoes as a backdrop to a series of small sandy
beaches, and endless fishing (though not without a permit) and superb
clamming that draw campers and RV drivers. The closest of the beaches
are some 20km from town, 5km from the highway, and there's no transport
to reach them.
Buses from Ensenada stop at Lázaro Cárdenas , 5km south of town. If you
want a place to stay , the Hotel La Pinta (tel 6/165-9008; US$60-80) is
the luxury option, right on the beach 3km off the highway, some 8km
south of Lázaro Cárdenas. More realistic alternatives include Cielito
Lindo (no phone; US$40-60), close to La Pinta , and Molino Viejo (tel
6/171-3353; US$25-40) - from where fishing trips can be organized - on
the bay; or one of the motels in town: Romo (tel 6/165-2396; US$10-15)
which also has a decent restaurant ; the new if spare Real del Cora at
km 193 (tel 6/166-8576; US$25-40); and at km 191, the decent Chavez (tel
6/165-2005; US$15-25). There are also plenty of camping spots around the
bay if you come equipped, and RV sites at the Molino Viejo . Should you
need internet access while In San Quintin, Internet Milenio has several
internet stations, costs about $2/hr and is right on the Carretera Trans
at km 195 (#4).
