PUNTA BETE |
| |
Tucked away between the more touristed resorts of Puerto Morelos and
Playa del Carmen, the sedate PUNTA BETE is little more than a beach,
several restaurants and a couple of small hotels, though there's now a
big, expensive resort further down the beach towards Playa del Carmen.
The beach is nowhere near as beautiful as those in Cancún or Playa del
Carmen though it does have the advantage of being uncrowded and for the
most part undeveloped. Paradise Point Resort (reservations in the US by
tel 651/762-8284, www.knowAmerica.com/Paradise ; US$25-40) has pretty
beachfront rooms and a small restaurant while Coco's Cabanas (tel
9/874-7056, cchr@caribe.net.mx : US$25-40) is a block back from the sea
but has individual cabañas, small pool and a restaurant serving good
international cuisine. The rooms at the Playa Xcalacoco restaurant (tel
9/872-0026; US$15-25) - which dishes up reasonably priced basic Mexican
food and superb fish from 7.30am until 8pm - are clean and simple though
there's no electricity. You can also camp here (less than US$5).
To get to Punta Bete , it's a slow, careful drive or a hot, dusty four-kilometre
walk down the potholed dirt track (signposted, at Km 296) from the
highway.
