OXKUTZCAB |
| |
From the village of OXKUTZCAB (also known as Huerta del Estado) on
Hwy-184, 20km from Labná, you can head north to Mérida via Ticul and
Mani. Though there's little reason to overnight in Oxkutzcab, it's as
good a place as any to stop for a while, with a huge fruit market ,
bustling and lively in the mornings, selling most of its produce by the
crate or sack. Calles 51 and 50 edge the main park and the mercado, with
a large Franciscan church cornering them. There are also some remote
Puuc ruins at Kuiuc and Xkichmook, both of which lie off a minor road
that runs south from the village of Oxkutzcab.
Buses to Mérida via Ticul (2hr), leave about every hour from the bus
station at the corner of C 56 and C 51; colectivos come and go from
beside the mercado on C 51. Of the two basic hotels , Hospedaje "Trujeque"
, C 48, opposite the park (tel 9/975-0568; US$10-15), is cleaner and
more comfortable, though Hospedaje Rosalia , C 54 no. 103 (tel
9/975-0167; US$5-10), is run by a very friendly Mexican and has the
advantage of being just around the corner from the bus station. The
Banamex bank on C 50, opposite the park has an ATM. Restaurants and
cafeterias skirt the market, but if you fancy a long, lazy lunch, try a
few blocks back at the Restaurante Su Cabaña Suiza , C 54 no. 101, where
comidas are served in the tranquillity of a spacious open-sided palapa.
